What is Aquaponics?
Aquaponics is a revolutionary system of agriculture that combines aquaculture (raising fish) with hydroponics (raising plants in water). In this system, fish provide the fertilizer for the plants, and the plants take up nutrients and cleanse the water for the fish. Aquaponics is inherently organic and never uses any pesticides or herbicides. Particularly important in California, aquaponics uses less than 10% of the water required for traditional agriculture!
Produce from the farm will be available at local farmers’ markets, providing an opportunity for participants on the farm to share their products with the wider community, learn important job and interpersonal skills, and contribute productively to healthy local food production. Costanoa Commons Farm is consulting with Jon Parr, a leader in aquaponics in the nation, who has founded his own nonprofit organization, School Grown.
